Peter -
I had looked at your initial post, but declined to reply as it seemed "out
of my league". XP is not a system I am really at all familiar with. The
first question one is inclined to ask is if you've done all of the customary
scans for malware/parasites on that system. Assuming that "all things being
the same" as you so poetically penned, it is unlikely that W98se (or the
previous W9.x systems) would fare so well without stringent spyware/malware
housecleaning. Therefore I would *guess* that your XP is clean. That being
the case, I am at a loss to really determine a cause for that slowdown as
you've described.
As far as adding the SP2 update goes, I would say Caveat Emptor on that.
There seems to be a number of systems which have gotten "broken" by that
update. I would hold off for a while until things are sorted, and the "Pros"
find the way to fix it and that which it broke. Unlikely to remedy your
symptoms anyway; most persons with XP before this update had systems which
worked fine. Why should yours be an exception?
If a bolt of lightning in the form of an epiphany strikes me, I'll get back
on this.
