In addition to the facts as laid out by Frank, you also *need IE to access
and download from Windows Updates*. There are workarounds, but not one
whereby you can get WU to scan your PC for necessary updates.
If you disable Active Scripting, and ActiveX (or at least set them to
prompt) in IE, you will have eliminated 90% of the problems which makes
people choose browsers such as Firefox. Firefox does not enable features
like ActiveX and the like. Therein lies its main security.
