If you are running Windows XP then wait a few days until you get SP2:
"Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Support Center "

In SP2 the IE6.x browser comes with a popup blocker.

As you can see, it will also turn on the XP firewall. By the road... you
should always run a firewall and antivirus software!
