Try doing a Repair. Accessed via the Change... button in Add/Remove
Programs. It seems to simulate a complete reinstall without requiring
either an uninstall or another download.

BTW that is the final step that fixed things up for me. I had also been
experimenting by toggling Internet settings in AR's Preferences dialog
(via Ctrl-k) and had even tried re-registering the .dll and .ocx in its ActiveX
directory. I think that most of my problems were caused by having to
back out of of a lot of stuff in order to upgrade to XPsp2RC2 recently.

I agree that as long as it is broken the implementation is flakey.
For example, it works (mostly) if AR is open and gives warnings otherwise.
They either should allow their options settings to ensure the necessary
pieces are present or issue better warning messages. (I forgot
to check the Event log but I doubt that it will have been used as an
alternative diagnostic.)
