Hello Jayne -

YW. So now you can access the board and post, albeit it, in plain text?
That's an improvement over "page cannot be displayed" isn't it? ;-)

Now, I will assume that you see smileys and the like at the group in which
you are trying to post. I also assume they *don't* have an *insert smiley
link* which is located in some obscure area; somewhere in the reply to post
area when you've opened a text box in which to reply. Also, some Boards do
not allow HTML (except by Admin permission), but will use a means such as BB
code.

BBCode is a special implementation of HTML. Whether you can actually use
BBCode in your posts on the forum is determined by the administrator. In
addition you can disable BBCode on a per post basis via the posting form.
BBCode itself is similar in style to HTML, tags are enclosed in square
braces [ and ] rather than < and > and it offers greater control over what
and how something is displayed. Depending on the template you are using you
may find adding BBCode to your posts is made much easier through a clickable
interface above the message area on the posting form. We'll get into that in
a little while later.

Before getting onto that, let's backtrack to the patch issue. What has led
you to believe this patch is one which you need to accomplish your end? Was
it recommended or suggested by someone? If so, from where? Remember, than
any patch and update that is offered from the WU site is deemed necessary to
the security and/or use of IE6. To get patches piecemeal from Windows
Downloads is *not* the recommended or safe procedure, as installing these
patches in the wrong order can *break* previously installed updates and
patches. Rely upon Windows Update to determine your needs. Our (yours and
mine) patches differ; this may be due to respectively different installation
dates of IE6 and the subsequent updates which were applied. As I've said,
later patches will supersede previous ones for a variety of reasons. This is
not always true, but is mostly the case when a *cumulative update* is
installed.

Last thing regarding this posting thing and updates/patches etc. I use
several other boards, and have no problem posting or inserting images,
modifying text, even inserting smileys (although I hate their choices <g>)
and I have neither of those patches which you are trying to install in your
machine. So I don't know what to say about the need for those patches.

Next, and most important: Have you looked at the FAQ at the board, or made
inquiry (by direct board post to Admin or fellow users) into the means by
which Smileys and the like are employed? There must be some answers to be
found therein. Now that you can post instead of getting a "page cannot be
displayed", I'd try that.

Some examples of how to employ BB Code:
http://www.cs.columbia.edu/sip/faq/help/ubbcode.php
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/faq.php?mode=bbcode

That's all I can think of for now. Sorry I haven't any other answers or
solutions to offer you. Best of luck Jayne, and I hope some of this may
help.

signed into the group. I have never been able to post on this group using
the standard (rich text???) format. I can post using plain text but that's
annoying because that means I can't use the smilies, change font or add
pictures to my posts.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7f0debb3-0b8d-4196-bd6d-9d8651e5f5c0&displaylang=en The first one tells me Interet explorer 6
needs to be installed to install the patch (I have got internet explorer 6
installed) and the second one tells me I need to have SP1 installed before
installing it and yep you guessed it I have already got SP1 installed!
