Internet Explorer almost useless... Red X's ... Page Cannot Be Displayed

Please help!

Whenever I try to go on the internet, I can connect very quickly to
google. When I go to Amazon.com (one of the thousands of examples), I
get a page with all X's where the buttons and pictures should be. If I
click on one of those buttons, then I get "This Page Cannot Be
Displayed" This seems to have occured since the last time that I
downloaded the patch from microsoft's update website. I've ran adaware
and search and destroy and no spyware is present. I've also ran norton
antivirus and no virus were detected.

I finally downloaded Mozilla Firefox after having this problem so I can
get on the internet. I have no problems connecting using that program.
I would just REALLY like to be able to use Explorer 6.0. I've tried
reverting back to 5.5.. still same problem, re-updated to 6.0 without
patches, same problem.

I've tried a great deal of things but no such luck.
