Can't you at least click on the Default Level button?
FWIW the applet works for me when I do that.
If I use Custom Java Permissions it doesn't.
But instead of your symptom I got:

You could get some more clues by enabling the Java Console
and trying Java tests at this site:

(I'm suggesting you activate the Java Console because otherwise
it won't be clear to you why so many of the the tests fail.)
