small square box with red x

When opening pages within a website, I sometimes come up
with a blank page with a small square box containing a
red "x" in the upper right corner. I've seen this box
before in places where pictures should be. Sometimes the
pictures replace the box after a few seconds, sometimes
they never do. I'm sure I must have some setting
blocking them, but I don't know what. Can someone help?
