Frustrating problem with IE connection on a LAN

I've been having a connection problem with IE on my laptop and have
tried everything to solve it, thus far to no avail. My hotel has a
broadband LAN connection (which is always on) into which I hook up my
laptop. I've had no problem whatsoever in other hotels, but for
whatever reason I can't get the connection working in this one.

Outline of the problem: My laptop detects the LAN when I connect the
cable (I get that little confirmation msg in bottom right corner of
screen when I hook it up), but when I fire up IE, neither the homepage
nor any other site can be accessed. I always get an IE error message:
"Internet Explorer could not find the search page" (even if it isn't
a search page) or the garden variety "the page cannot be displayed."
There's probably something wrong with the network settings, but no
matter what I do I can't solve it. I've tried *everything*. I've
done the standard View-->Internet Options-->Connections, then LAN
settings, then "Automatically Detect Settings"-- nada. I've tried the
Setup Wizard and get nowhere (it assumes that the always-on broadband
LAN of the hotel should connect automatically). I've rebooted the
laptop and nothing works.

The hotel has its own PCs that work fine and apparently other laptops
can connect here, but mine won't do it. This hotel has a 100MBps
connection while IIRC most others had 10MBps, but otw I see no
difference and have no idea why I'd be having this problem. Has
anyone else encountered this, is there some hidden setting (or maybe
security feature or whatnot) that I need to tweak in IE, *any way* to
solve this infuriating problem? Thanks for any suggestions.
