Re: Desktop and Start Menu on roaming profile does not update

Currently I redirect My documents to a Z:\ drive on a separate share

The Z drive is how the users see it, not how the server sees it, tho,
correct?

The laptop users have this available offline

If I have:
user accounts to map Z:\ to \\Server\Userdata\Username
RoamPro mapped to \\Server\Profiles$\Username

Should I create another share \\Server\Desktops$ and map to
\\Server\Desktops$\Username? I can see problems with mapping desktops
to the Z:\ folder with or without using UNC.

You need to use UNC paths when you redirect anything so I'm not sure what
you mean. I would change the My Documents to "everyone uses same location,
create a subfolder" (my dreadful paraphrase), so for each redirected folder,
you would specify \\server\userdata and it would effectively create \My
Documents, \Desktop and \Application Data for each user.

You can map it then...

net use z: "\\server\userdata\%username%\My Documents" /persistent:no

I don't personally use or like offline files (I use third party stuff) but I
would have a separate folder redirection policy for laptop users (by putting
laptops in their own OU and using a policy with loopback processing). I
don't know how you can use offline files for desktop or app data, though. I
admit this is a pain.

I don't believe it can be a permissions problem because my account
is a Domain Admin account and my folder has the same permission
setup as every other folder:

\\Server\Profiles$\JoeSchmoe
Domain Admins, System, JoeSchmoe all Full

\\Server\Profiles$\SallyJones
Domain Admins, System, SallyJones all Full

\\Server\Profiles$\MyUsername
Domain Admins, System, Me all Full

and PROFILES$ has everyone=full for the share permissions?

I can go to the folder from my workstation and delete and add to my
server copy of the profile, and I can do the same locally but the
changes don't propegate for me only. I have even downloaded
UPHClean to see if maybe my profile was still in use at shutdown
however this did not help the problem either. UPHClean says it was
successful every logoff.
No errors in the application or system log either.

I'd try the following tests:

Back up the server copy of the profile by making a copy of it
elsewhere On one computer, log in as another admin acct and delete
the cached profile
(or use delprof across the network)
Log in as yourself and let the server copy download
See if you can reproduce the problem

AND

Delete or ename the server copy of the profile
Log into a workstation that has a cached copy of the profile
Let it upload (log in/out/in)
See whether you can reproduce the problem

I use roaming profiles nearly everywhere and don't run into problems
with this. That said, with or without them, I strongly suggest you
use folder redirection for My Docs, Desktop and Application
Data - don't leave those in the profile path. Keep the profiles
miniscule.

I guess there is a know problem where Domain Admin's user profiles
do not update properly.

I'm not aware of any....

If I add an item to my desktop it adds fine,
but I can never get it to remove unless I go right to the stored
profile on the server.

Is there some way around this other than removing my account from
the Domain Admins because I am constantly doing admin fuctions
throughout the day and want to use my own logon.

Check your event logs for errors. I suspect you've got permissions
problems on the roaming profile folder in question.
