Re: Differential Startmenus based on computer delivered via Group Policy

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Rich,

Thanks for the suggestions. I had been playing with the OU approach,
but I wasn't making any headway.

I'm intreagued by the custom ADM file approach you cite. You mention
a shortcut to someone else's work, but I couldn't find it in your
post. Could you please supply the link?

Thanks again. Any way I can shorten the development cycle on this
problem will be a big help.

This is a user policy setting. So you have two or three choices Create a new
OU for Lab1, Lab2, etc. Assuming the users are static in those labs (which I
doubt they are) you can create a folder redirection policy. User
configuration -> Windows Settings -> Folder redirection.

Second, you can create your OUs and add the computer objects instead, and do
a startup/login script that copies in what you want...

OR

You can do a custom ADM file and apply it to the administrative templates,
and go that route. Luckily for you someone has made this pretty painless.

Here's a shortcut to what someone else has done. Personally I like to keep
my GPOs as vanilla as possible, but sometimes it's necessary.

We are in the process of transitioning from a mixed Netware/Windows AD
network to a pure Windows AD network.

We have been using Novell's Zenworks to deliver differential Start
Menu entries based on location; i.e. if they were in Lab 1, they would
see a Start Menu reflecting common software + programs
licensed/installed ONLY in Lab 1; in Lab 2, they see a different Start
Menu reflecting different software licensed/available ONLY in Lab #2
(plus any programs common to all locations).

I'm a bit rusty/primitive on group policy management (we've used it
for folder redirection and software restriction policies). Can anyone
suggest how best to use group policies to deliver different start
menus to users as they login to computers in different locations?

We're currently delivering common programs via a folder redirection to
a server-based StartMenu folder. Can we create multiple group
policies which apply to 2 security groups - say, students and Lab1 (a
group consisting of a collection of computer objects), students and
Lab 2, etc, each policy redirecting to a unique, server-based
Startmenu folder?

Thanks for any thoughts. I'm trying to brainstorm and a nudge in the
right direction could save a great deal of valuable time.

(P.S. - I can't assign group policies just to a security group of
workstations, as I don't want non-student users logging into these
stations to be subject to the same restrictions)
