You need to configure the Vista GPO for folder redirection. This is in the user's OU. When you do that, the My Documents folder in XP is redirected to the Documents folder for Vista. You need the Vista RSAT to create the new policy,

Second problem: I bought a new PC and connected it to our network at the start of this year. I assumed if I put it into the same place in ADUC as my existing Windows XP PC, all the existing GPOs would work just the same on it. So indeed they appear to do, except there is a funny one in regard to Folder Redirection:.
I have a redirection of My Documents and My Pictures to server shares. On my Start menu, both show up as items and are set to appear as menus. This works just fine.
The problem is, there are two Documents and Pictures folders when I click on my name at the top right of the Start menu, and in other places where I'm seeing Vista's built list of shortcuts for this PC. Let's say I open My Computer and click on C drive to open it. I get on the left hand side of the window, a list of Favourite links, and a list of folders. The list of folders includes one that has my name on it, and when I open that folder, inside it has a number of other folders, including two Documents folders and two Pictures folders. In each case, one of these is the redirected folder on the server, and the other is the user profile folder inside the user profile in C:\Users.
The whole point of folder redirection is that people don't have access to the original folder in C:\Users, instead it points to the server but MS seems to want to have a buck both ways in Vista, creating an additional redirected folder instead of actually redirecting the original profile folder.
Is there something extra in Group Policy in Windows Vista that you have to configure as well to make the profile folder go away?
