KJ-
I think we're talking around the problem. You want to be able to see ADMX templates in GP editor (or GPMC) on XP and 2003 just like you can see ADM files for Xp, SP2 on Server 2003, SP1. I get that. You want a version of both GPMC and GPEdit (because you would need both to be updated) that can see all the new settings that come with Vista. I understand that. Because keep in mind that you can create Group Policies that affect Vista machines using GPMC and GPEdit on XP and 2003. Remember that Vista's ADMXs are a superset of the ADMs that shipped with XP and 2003. So, for example, you can create a GPO on XP or 2003 that removes the Run command from the start menu and that GPO would still happily affect a Vista machine. What you don't get is the extra new admin. template settings that Vista provides, and the only reason you don't get those is that MS made the decision to change from ADM to ADMX. But in reality, if someone took the time, they could convert all the ADMXs that ship with Vista to ADMs (note that there is a tool on the MS download site to do the opposite!) and then you'd be able to get to all those settings from Xp or 2003. So its not really an issue with GPMC or GPEdit as much as a change in the Admin. Template format. And again, this is just about admin. templates.

Mark,

I can't seem to get you away from thinking I'm proposing Vista functionality should be extended to other operating systems.

It's just an issue of managing Vista group policies from either Windows 2003 GPMC or Windows XP GPMC.

As you recall XP did not and to this day does not come with GPMC. It, like the Windows 2003 Admin tools for XP, are separate downloads. They extend the ability to manage the Infrastructure from the XP platform.

Probably not a Vista developers problem as it really is an AD / Server issue until Longhorn releases.
Perhaps someone in the appropriate MS product group will recognize the interim issue and release a GPMC version 2.x supported on XP to manage the entire supported infrastructure.

BTW, I still haven't seen an answer to the question of Why the Vista GPMC version could not run on XP from a technology perspective. Everyone from MS seems to just dance around this question. Perhaps they just don't know why.

Not getting anywhere with this thread. Perhaps the others that follow after Vista begins to roll out in corporate can articulate the problem and management need adequately.

Absolutely, and I still try to integrate the newest electronical and
mechanical features from my new car to my old one ... but *argh* they
don´t fit.

:-)

Despite of having a technical problem you have a licensing problem,
because for some CSEs, like the possibility to integrate the WLAN CSE
on XPSP2, you need some DLLs from a 2003 Server and they are not shipped
in XP.
