Don't do it.
Hacking the registry is the only way to change your settings. And Yes,
whenever you log back onto the domain your settings will get changed back.
You could block or change the registry then export the keys in order to
re-apply them.
However, you are playing with fire!
If something gets pushed out via GP that's important you are not going to
know until after you screw it up. Guess how fast the admins are going to
come to the rescue? And it is just a matter of time until something gets
broke doing what your talking about.
The real question is, why have they not taken your local admin rights away?

Hello,.
I have a corporate laptop, and I want to disable the folder redirection for
"Application Data" and "My Documents". Both are redirected to a network
drive, and this drives me nuts. "My Docs" is not really a problem, coz I
could put my data elsewhere on my HD, but "Application Data" redirection is a
major pain in the a**e (I don't know whether it's the way the admins deployed
it or it's just the way it works, but everytime I logon while not connected
to the network I loose all my customized settings of firefox, ms office apps,
and wifi, to name the three that frustrates me most).
So after some googling and getting to know more about GPO etc. than I ever
wanted to know, I still didn't find a clean way of doing this on my laptop.
The "brute" way would be to manually set the folder redirection to its
default settings in the registry and then to delete fdeploy.dll to prevent
GPO to change it again, but I have some questions re this method:
- would this effectively stop the startup script changing it again?
- can admins figure out that the redirection doesn't work on my laptop?
- can they then change it again and copy fdeploy.dll again on my machine?
- how can I prevent this? (e.g. a script that runs at startup before the GPO
scripts and that deletes fdeploy.dll each time?)
Or is there a better way to accomplish my goal? e.g.
- changing fdeploy.ini or {...}.ini files, but this is apparently a local
cache, that can be overwritten?
- disabling fdeploy.dll / changing settings through the registry?
- ... other suggestions ???
Thanks a lot for your help.
Peter
PS: I feel like a sheep asking advice to the wolves (or chicken to the fox,
or whatever :-) on this forum, and yes, I did try to follow "company rules"
to change it: numerous calls to helpdesk and admins (who showed me how to
change registry settings, and were themselves surprised that GPO changed it
again), discussion with the local big IT manitou who decides on this GPO
stuff. He told me that "my docs" redirection was requested by users, but
could be bypassed by putting data elsewhere (sic), and that "my apps"
redirection was a "mistake from the past" and that a project was being
discussed to change this, but given the size of user base, this could take
another couple of years (sic!!).
