I occasionally find that I need to re-install packages installed by group policy (usually when software gets corrupted, or clashes are found with newer programs). According to the documentation, if a program assigned to a computer is removed, this will be detected when the computer reboots and will be automatically re-installed.You have to go to this section in the registry:
I find this is simply not the case. I can remove anything I like via add/remove programs and the computers never re-install things automatically.
Today I've needed to re-install Adobe Acrobat 7 on a computer after the installation of a 2nd piece of software corrupted the IE plugin. This is what I found:
- Removing the software via add/remove programs appears to run fine. The uninstall program starts, runs, and acrobat is removed from the list of installed software.
- Rebooting does not cause the software to re-install
- Checking Add/Remove programs reveals Acrobat is still present, but without the usual icons. Implying the program has gone, but the add/remove programs entry has remained.
- Removing Acrobat now removes the icon immediately.
- The Acrobat icon re-appears if I close and re-open add/remove programs - Checking c:\program files confirms that the program has in fact been removed however windows still believes it's installed.
To get this program to re-install, I entered the registry, searched for 'Acrobat' and removed any registry keys that appeared relevant. These included software settings for the default user, and a number of group policy settings relating to the deployed program.
Once this was done, rebooting the computer caused the software to re-install.
Does anybody know a better way to remove or re-install packages that have been assigned to computers. Bearing in mind that this is for a single machine - I'm aware that I can re-deploy software via group policy but that is not an option - much of our software is installed in a specific order, re-deploying applications throughout the company will cause chaos.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\AppMgmt
Here you will find all the apps that have been installed via GP. delete the key, reboot and your app should be reinstalled from GP.
