It all depends what you're trying to do...
In some cases roaming profiles could be replaced with gpo & scriptings...
For example:
1.) keep you connected printers -> use print script in gpo
2.) config mail profile -> build custom outlook package or script
3.) application config -> build custom outlook package, script or create adm
template
Again it all depends what you are trying to do???
Best practices should always be
1.) Use folder redirection for My Documents and Application Data,
2.) Optimize Roaming profiles through gpos (exclude specific folders such as
desktop,etc) - Adm templates\System\User profiles
