"Making sense" can be a relative thing at times :-),....but yes, we seem to
be seeing the same experience.

Make sure the "Use Gateway on Remote Network" remains enabled, which it is
by default. then the laptop is protected by the LAN just as if it was
physically attached to it. It also protects the LAN from the Internet (from
the Laptop's end).
This default setting prevents the Laptop from directly accessing the
Internet while the VPN is up by forcing all traffic to follow the VPN
link,...so the Laptop must go through the LAN to get to the Internet (and
vice-versa) just as when it is physically on the LAN. So it doesn't need
the Personal Firewall Active when the VPN is up. Just verify that when the
VPN link is closed that the Personal Firewall becomes active again, I've
never tested that myself.
