I'm not familiar with Vista at all, so it's very possible that the firewall
is preventing this. I went into the firewall exception list and checked the
File and Printer Sharing, but that didn't seem to do the trick. Are there
any other filewall settings I should check?
Just to clarify, I'm only trying to access files on my desktop from my Vista
laptop. I don't really care at this point about sharing files on the laptop.
Thanks,
Todd

Are you really sure, that the Vista firewall is off or configured?.
Standardly if the firewall is activated without any configurations, it
will block all, the permission to access to the shared folder and ping.
Maybe you have just choosen another W-LAN standard. be sure that you are
using everywhere 802.11g and b

My encryption was previously set to WEP, so I was just using it because I

the best security, and will upgrade once I get everything connected.
Regarding the W-LAN, I assume you're asking if the laptop can connect to the
network in general, and the answer is yes. I'm able to access the internet
without issue. Also, one other factor. I have a second, older laptop
running XP, and I started it up for the first time in my new house, and it
was able to access the shared files on my desktop without any issues. So
this problem seems to be specifically associated with the Vista computer.

Hello Todd,
I just don´t understand what you have done.
You just said, that you moved recently, so you changed your SSID. Why
did you change your encryption to WEP? WEP is not save. You should
better use WPA or better WPA2.
2. Can your computer connect to the W-LAN? If yes did you start up a
firewall or anything else? Just look for for the same settings on both
computers. Both should have then WEP with the same encryption length and
password.
I hoped to help you. Maybe you can write just a bit more.

Not sure if this is the right group, but thought I'd start here. I have for
a long time used file sharing permissions to allow me to access files on my
desktop computer from a laptop connected via a wireless network. I moved
recently, and felt I needed to beef-up my network security, so I changed the
SSID name and re-enabled WEP wireless security (using the same code I had
used in the past). For some reason my laptop is no longer able to access my
desktop files.
To troubleshoot, I unshared My Documents, then shared them again using the
same name ("documents"). Still no luck. The laptop is using Vista.
The only error I get is that "Windows cannot access \\emachine\documents".
I've restarted both computers since changing the SSID name.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Todd
