Thanks in advance for reading this and your advice!
Our sub-organization was purchased a nice, new Dell server pre-loaded with
all the files we could ever want for our work. (Sorry, can't go into too
many
details here.)
The downside is that while MOST of the files are organized, SOME of the
files are NOT. There are several directories with in excess of 1,100,000
files totalling 200+GB in them. No subdirectories, LOTS of 200kbish files.
This is retarded. WindowsXP / Server2k3 takes 25+ minutes just to open the
directory and display the files.
What I'm trying to do is break those down into 22ish subdirectories of
50,000 files each, which the computer seems to open just fine.
Right NOW my procedure is to (1) spend 25 minutes opening the directory,
(2)
select 50,000 files, and (3) cut-and-paste them into their appropriate
subdirectory, which Windows then tells me will take anywhere from 45-70
minutes.
At this rate it's going to take weeks to move all these files. And that's
not even *organizing* them; that's just breaking them down. After that I'm
going to have to sort through them. So if anyone can offer some advice as
to
how I can speed up the moving-to-subdirectories process, I would be
grateful
beyond words.
Thanks again!
Jim
This is fairly easy to do but you need to make a few decisions:
- What names do you want to use for your 22 folders?
- Which files should go where? Just start at the beginning and take 50,000
files at a time?
- Why 50,000 files? You would speed up your access considerably if you made
it 10,000 files per folder!
.
