Re: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM corrupted

Thank you for trying to help me.
I have managed to get to step 9 successfully
Unfortunately, I can't follow how to do steps 10 & 11:

10. From the Snapshot folder, copy the following files to the C:\Windows\Tmp
folder: • _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
• _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
• _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
• _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
• _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM

11. Rename the files in the C:\Windows\Tmp folder as follows: • Rename
_REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT to DEFAULT
• Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY to SECURITY
• Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE to SOFTWARE
• Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM to SYSTEM
• Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM to SAM

I am not sure how to actually do this, ie in any way at all???

Also, in my snapshot folder, the only folders there date from 6.40 pm
tonight, which is 4 hrs post system config corruption, and the other 3 date
from Dec 2002. I have no idea why such a big gap.. I figured that this is too
old to be of much use, even though I don't know how to do steps 10 & 11.

I have just restarted my computer as normal instead, and it is now asking me
to reactivate windows on my pc. Is this a bad thing? I have my cert of
authenticity sticker and its number, I presume that is all I need ??

Thank you again for your assistance.

Hello alliht,

The folders in part 2 are used to store the backups you have done at part1,
so that you can now go on with restoring the registry. Just follow the steps
and it should work.

Otherwise i think you are right and have to reinstall the machine.

Best regards
