Is there a maximum recommended disk size for SAN
drives? I'm not referring
to the maximum disk size technically possible.
I'm thinking about backup/restore times in the event
a partition gets
screwed, times to run disk checks, etc.
Any info on experiences much appreciated.
it's not so much the size as it is what's there -- chkdsk
times correlate to the number of MFT entries, so a 300GB
volume with 10,000,000 files & dirs is going to take much,
much longer to fix than a 3 TB volume with only 100,000
files & dirs.
and with restores, small files are the ultimate bandwidth
killer... so lots of very small files can take far longer
to restore than fewer big files, even if in terms of space
the latter is consuming 2-3x as much or more.
start by figuring out what sort of downtime windows your
business can deal with for various apps & go from there.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
