Re: Swap on invisible partition

It is a different partition, not a different disk?

It is a different partition.
My standard configuration is: Primary partition with the system on it
(that means I install Win98SE, NT4, W2k, XP or whatewer there)
followed by the swapfile in the first logical drive in the extended
partition, followed by a logical drive in the extended partition for
data.

Then it is not the best
solution.

It is the best in the given conditions. At todays harddisk where the
smallest size you can buy new is 80GB I can not explain to the
customers why he should buy a second hdd as long as his first is 90%
empty anyway.

Better it is placed on a different fast harddisk. Have a look here,
about placement:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314482

Ofcourse, I know that, but I simply have not that configuration.

In the rare case I have a multiple hdd configuration (happened more
often in the old days when disks were smaller) I use one swapfile in a
partition on every physical harddisk. (At least with NT based systems,
Win9x can do this only with tricks.)

If you will block users to use the drive for saving data, just leave the
administrator, administrators group and the system with Full control on that
partition and remove all other users/groups from the security tab.

This is a good idea, have to test it out.
Normally the workstations are configured so that the users have the
rights of the power user group.

I suppose by blocking them out of the partition with the swapfile
still allows them to see this drive, so questions like "why can I not
access that drive?" will be iminent. Not elegant but should work.
