Hi David,
DFSR is being used to replicate between two DC's and a non-DC server all in the same domain. Two are Enterprise and one is Standard.
My SyncToy is running on a standalone Vista Ultimate machine and not a member of that forest. It simply adds, deletes or replaces files on the non-DC server which is running as a virtual guest under my Vista. The non-DC server than uses DFSR to efficiently replicate the files to the production servers over a slow 1MB WAN (which is much faster than if I didn't use DFSR!).
The two production servers are also on a WAN, but that ISP offers 3MB and works fine for us.
The WAN is connected via three Symantec VPN routers.
[A bit off the subject: I noticed Vista has DFSR, but I'm not sure how it would play in my configuration. I'm wondering if I joined my Vista to the domain if it would be a good replacement for the non-DC server? I don't see any Vista DFS Management console (dfsmgmt.msc) however, so I guess I would have to use the one on the server to set up DFSR folders on Vista?]
As far as Symantec AntiVirus goes - yes, it is installed on the all the servers and it does protect the DFSR folders. It is SAVCE v10.1 (which is above the v8.1 mentioned in your website).
I must be missing something as far as using AntiVirus software on a DFS folder. All I can find in your referenced sites is:
"The same resources that are excluded for a SYSVOL replica set must also be excluded when FRS is used to replicate shares that are mapped to the DFS root and link targets on Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003-based member computers or domain controllers." (found in KB822158)
I don't believe that DFSR uses FRS, but with that said, I imagine that I should at least exclude the following DFRS folders?
1) DfsrPrivate
2) DFSRoots
However, I don't know if I should exclude all the DFS folders contents. If I did that, how would I prevent contaminated Excel or Word files from being placed on the server? I can't depend on the Workstations to not do this as their AntiVirus software may be failing. Or maybe the SAVCE "Auto-Protect" (a real-time scan) running on the server would suffice?
I should point out that Disk Cleanup on one of the DFSR servers somehow got "compress files" turned on and that compressed everything! I've since disabled that and decompressed that server plus all the DFS folders on the other servers (as the compressed files did replicate). Maybe the compression started this, but not all those files had their timestamps changed.

Bob
