Re: Downloading of files a problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi, Gilbert.

Neither are we. :>( It would help A LOT if you would at least mention which operating system you are using. WinXP? Vista? 64-bit?

Have you changed the default setting so that you can at least SEE the extensions? In Control Panel | Folder Options | View, there are at least 3 settings that need to be changed if you are and Administrator and not a newbie:
Check: Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide extensions for known file types
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)

Note that last one; MS recommends that you leave this checked and even provides an additional warning if you uncheck it; if you are not sure, leave it checked.

After unchecking the "hide extensions", you should be able to see what kind of file you are downloading. And the Save As window that you see before clicking Save should tell you EXACTLY where Windows plans to put that file. If you click Run, instead of Save, Windows will put the file in a temporary location that may be hard for you to find later. It's best to click Save, then YOU tell Windows where to put the file; when the Save is finished, you should see another windows with an option to Run the just-downloaded file if it is an executable.

Hello Pegasus(MVP): I do not know the file extension, I would need to try and
download the file again to read it. This problem is on every download I try,
Microsofts critical updates do get downloaded though, thats why I thought is
was a problem with the registry or some internal problem of the operating
system. Gilbert
