Help PLEASE???

Hello All,
I hope that this is not too long and drawn out but please bare with me.
In the past several months we have had some strange issues with files on our
file server.
If a person "using Ultra Edit" has a file open for a period of time they get
the following error message.
"\\servername\sharename\filename\ has been changed by another application.
Would you like to reload it?"
The fact is nothing else "physically" has changed this file.
We contacted Ultra Edit and they basically had us change something in the
program settings.
Unfortunately some people here are not satisfied with this option.
Another program we have, Unigraphics, has also in 1 instance displayed a
very similar error.
I have researched this until I was blue in the face but can not find
anything on the net that would lead me to believe this is a problem with my
SAN/RAID/File System.
Our environment is as follows:
Windows 2003 file and print server.
Service Pack 2 and all available updates.
NTFS file system.
Services for Unix.
We have 1 last Unix box in the domain and it still requires SFU to interact
with the file system.
I have looked at the event logs on both the file server and any PC affected
by this but see nothing that sticks its head out.
Can anyone lend a hand in this?
Has anyone seen this before?
Could this be caused by a running process that might change the timestamps
on files?
Any idea what Windows processes could do this?
One last thing….
Under Computer Management in Shared Folders and then Open Files on the file
server.
If I open a file with anything other than a Microsoft product it temporarily
displays that the file has opened but within a 5 to 10 second period it
disappears.
Why does Word or Excel files remain visible while others seem to be closed?
Or at least not displayed as Opened?
Any comments and help would really be great at this point.
Thanks a Bunch
