If you intend to investigate XOSL then I recommend that
you play with it on a spare disk until you're comfortable with
it.
A virtual server would be ideal to test boot loaders and "play" with
it
Interesting thought. Assuming that the OP does have a machine
with Virtual Server loaded, I'm not sure how well this environment
could duplicate the real world of boot loaders, e.g.
- Booting the virtual machine from a real floppy disk.
- Manipulating the MBR of the virtual disk.
- Partitioning the virtual disk.
- Distinguishing between primary and logical partitions.
Unfortunately, I don't have VMware or such installed on my machine - as
that
is what I think you mean. Should be interested but to my expectations it
may
not be a real simulation indeed.
I will have to play around with the machine's hard disk.

You could get an old 4 or 20 GByte hard disk from your
friendly computer dealer. They are so small by today's standards
that they should cost you next to nothing. I have several lying
about . . .
Well, XOSL has an uninstall option and the option to use the original MBR.
So I installed it straight away. Unfortunately it did not work and so didn't
the "use the original MBR" option. Uninstalling the bootmanager left me with
an unusable MBR. I try to reinstall grub now ...
