Hi all,
Perhaps this is not the correct news group but I could not find a better
obne for this subject.
I have a hard disk with 1 primary partition (C:, FAT32) where the
version, bootloaders are installed. On the same disk there are a few logical
partitions, on each of one is a different Windows version installed (XP
Home, XP Pro, Win 2K, Vista). When I boot up, this is what happens:
First of all there is the Vista bootloader, which lets me choose between
Vista and a previous Windows version. When I choose the previous
versions.the old Windows bootloader comes up with the variety of Windows
isI have tried to install an external boot manager to achieve that there
Ionly one bootmenu, where I can pick the choice of which OS to boot from.
It
did not work as it did not seem possible to start Windows from a logical
partition straight away.
Now I have installed Ubuntu on the same disk in a new partition. The
result
is, that when I boot up, I first get the Grub bootloader to choose from,
then the Vista bootloader and then the old Windows bootloader. Basically
would like to use the Grub bootloader to choose the Windows versions as
well. So - my question is not how to use Grub, but how can I start a
Windows
version from a logical partition with an external bootloader?
I haven't managed to achieve that yet.
Thanks in advance for your help.

This depends very much on the boot loader you chose. Some
can launch Windows installations residing on any type of
(primary, logical) and some can't. XOSL is one of those that
can do the lot. It is free but it requires either an existing FAT32
partition or a dedicated 15 MByte partition (could be primary
or logical).
If you intend to investigate XOSL then I recommend that
you play with it on a spare disk until you're comfortable with
it. You might then use it instead of Grub in order to launch
Ubuntu and any of your Windows installations.
Post again if you need more details.
Thanks! This looks exactly like what I need. I have already downloaded XOSL.
I will try it out.
Regards,
Fokke
