Making a Bart PE CD is not something that the average client
can do by himself.
I am not aware of any method that would bypass the OS while
in remote control mode.

I will see if my customer can do this for me as I cannot easily get
physical
access to the server.
If not, any other ideas for bypassing the OS itself remotely. I'm
beginning
to think the data may be corrupt though as it exhibits the behavior on the
copy (done months ago) on the Windows 2003 server AND the Windows 2000
server
as well.

In such cases I tend to get the sledge hammer which consists
of booting the machine with a Bart PE boot CD (www.bootdisk.com).
If I was still unable to copy the files while in the Bart environment
then I would assume some corruption in file system.

Thanks for the response. The total length of the path that I am
looking
at
is about 30 characters total.
Just for some additional information, I am logged into the machine from
a
terminal (RDP) session.

I've encountered a bizarre problem in trying to perform a data
migration
for
one of my customers. I'm trying to copy files from an old Windows
2000
Server SP4 domain controller to a new Windows 2003 R2 SP2 domain
controller.
On some files within the directories I cannot copy or otherwise
modify
them
in any way. My account is a member of the Domain Admins group (this
group
was renamed) and therefore is a member of the built-in
Administrators
group.
Again, both of these servers are domain controllers.
I have tried a number of different way to take ownership of the
folders
and
files in the containing folders using icacls and using Windows
Explorer
both
on the Windows 2000 and 2003 servers but to no avail. What I mean
is
that
I
have tried pushing down the owner and resetting the permissions down
the
tree
but it hasn't worked (in the case of the files that I am referring
to).
I have also tried going directly to the files in question and, using
both
command line utilities and GUI tools, tried to set permissions.
Command
line
utilities return the "...cannot find the file specified" error and
the
Security tab in Windows Explorer doesn't appear.
Other files in the directories are fine and I can properly
administer
them.
I know that, before I got involved, permissions were set too loosely
on
some
file shares so that users themselves could modify the permissions.
I
suspect
they changed these items in some cases so that only one user could
access
the
file taking away the default permissions for the Administrators as
well.
I
can't say this for certain in all cases however.
Any ideas?
This could happen if the combined length of path+file name is greater
than 255 characters. Use subst.exe or create a share to reduce the
effective length, or tighten your excessively long folder names.
