I need to know the exact details of regedit.exe, e.g.

C:\WINDOWS>dir regedit.exe
Volume in drive C is WinXP
Volume Serial Number is 3848-392A

Directory of C:\WINDOWS

03/08/2004 15:56 146,432 regedit.exe

I also need some additional information:
- What happens when you type notepad.exe {Enter}
- What do you get when you type set path {Enter}

cd /d "%Windir"{Enter}
This command worked fine
dir regedit.* {Enter}
The regedit.exe was displayed
regedit.exe {Enter}
When executed this command it gave me a message "The
system
cannot find the file C:\WINNT\regedit.exe

If you are a beginner in Windows administration then the first
thing you should do is attend a training course in server
administration. If you don't then there is a high risk of making
some very, very expensive mistakes. We often see the results
of such mistakes in these newsgroups.

The following notes relate to you operating in a Command Prompt
environment. To start a Command Prompt, click Start / Run /
cmd {OK}.

Now type these commands and report the result in each case:
cd /d "%Windir"{Enter}
dir regedit.* {Enter}
regedit.exe {Enter}

Sir i am not a system administrator. I am beginner in Windows
administration.
you can go ahead and explain me in details, its fine.

Regarding specifying the default folder as winNT i really do not
remember,
but i am sure it was not an upgrade from a Windows 2000 to Win 2003
SBS.

Windows could end up in c:\WinNT because you specified this
folder as a target folder or because this installation is an upgrade
from a Windows 2000 server installation.

I am facing a dilemma with respect to your "regedit" question
because I cannot work out your level of experience. If I formulate
my answer so that a server administrator can understand it then
you may not understand what I'm talking about. If I formulate
it so that it can be understood by a beginner then you may be
irritated because of the level of detail it contains. You imply
that you are a server administrator yet your questions suggest
that you have no experience with command execution mechanisms.

Thanks for the reply. I am sure that the default windows folder for
SBS2003
is WINNT and not windows. I have SBS installed on my server and when
i
browse
the WINNT directory Regedit.exe is existing but when i double click
on
it
to
open it it gives me the error "Windows cannot find 'regedit'", the
same
error
appears when i try opening regedit from the command prompt or from
Start -->
Run --> Regedit.

What could be the cause that the Default directory changed from
Windows
to
WINNT.

I am having Windows 2003 Server SBS, suddenly i am not able to
access
the
registry using regedit or regdt32 or even directly from
C:\WINNT\Regedit.exe.
I get an error message saying "Windows cannot find 'regedit'".

I scanned the system using Symantec Enterprise, McAfee, Spybot
but
found
no
viruses or worms.

How can i rectify this problem? What is the likely cause of this
problem.

Thank you.

The primary cause is most likely that you're looking in the
wrong place. The default Windows folder for SBS2003
is c:\Windows, not c:\WinNT. Next you should look at
your path but then you probably know this already, seeing
that you are a server administrator.
