RE: Storing Shadow Copies on System Volume

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

A quick look at the white paper in the link you provided suggests that I may
get an answer from that when I have a chance to read it, so thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for posting.

Based on my knowledge, Shadow Copies of Shared Folders provides
point-in-time copies of files that are located on shared resources, such as
a file server. With Shadow Copies of Shared Folders, you can view shared
files and folders as they existed at points of time in the past. You can
access the server portion of Shadow Copies of Shared Folders through the
Shadow Copies tab of the Local Disk Properties dialog box.

Hi -

I have been upgrading some file servers lately (bigger disks, Windows
2003
R2) and I'm wondering about using the System Drive for storing shadow
copies.

I know that the shadow copies definitely shouldn't be on the same volume
as
the data that is being shadow copied. But I have also understood that
they
should not be on a volume with high IO.

Most of these are not highly utilized file servers, so I am guessing that
there is not a huge amount of disk IO even on the System Drive. In all
cases
the System Drive is a hardware RAID 1 (mirror). In some cases the
servers
are brand new and have plenty of processing power. The new ones tend to
have
system partitions that are over 70 GB, so there is a lot of space there
that
will go unused.

Can anyone advise whether or not to use the System Drive for shadow
copies?

Thanks.
