: 1. Although external USB drive is a little bit slower it offload

can.

: 2. A second minor advantage is by separating the "temp" file from
other
: files making your main HD less fragmented.

I don't really have an issue with either, considering I have 4 15k
146GB SCSI drives in a RAID 10 configuration off a PERC 320 RAID
controller cardl. I use the externals to hold my backups and or
miscellaneous update files, nothing I really access too much. But
even on my Dell Inspirion 620 Laptop, XP is up, running and fully
functional within 15-20 seconds, so again wouldn't have the issue,
and NTFS drives don't defragment as quickly as FAT/FAT32 does, so my
once a month defragmentaion is sufficient. The performance hit you
take in normal, day-to-day use during heavy I-O to temp files would
surely be a deterent to me just to begin surfing the web 10-15
seconds earlier or to defragment my drive less often - but don't
fret, it is quite ingenious you've discovered this thing <grin>!
