Hi Walter,
I suspect the folder you tried to modify ACL is on the file server. Let's
perform following test:
1. Create a new User account with domain admins privilege in domain to test
2. Try to modify ACL on the workstation to see if there are any problems.
3. Do you have other workstations? Please try to modify ACL on other
workstations to see the results.
4. Try to perform a clean boot to eliminate any third-party influence.
To boot into Clean Boot environment:
1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3. In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4. Click OK and restart your computer.

Windows XP

5. Try to reset security settings to default. Check following article:

Hope this helps.

Environment:
SBS2003 w/AD Implemented (PDC)
Win2K3 Standard (BDC - Fileserver)
My user account has domain admin privileges and for a while now I've been
adjusting the ACL's on folders of our network with no problem for many
theuntil today. Suddenly I'm unable to do so.
Whenever I attempt to add a user or group to a folders security, I get
typesmessage:
An Object named "UserName" cannot be found. Check the selected object
previous(..etc).
My Object Types has user, groups or built in all selected (as was
today)to today)
My From This Location has my local domain selected (as was previous to
error
My Object Name can be ANY user or group, and it still results in the
serveras if it cannot read from AD.
Again, this is only when attempting this from my workstation, on the
ourlogged in as Administrator it works fine.
The only thing that has recently changed was that yesterday, I promoted
thisfile server to a BDC by using dcpromo. Our PDC is SBS 2003. I'm guessing
somehow introduced the problem....
