Re: Open File Dialog Hangs on Video Files

thanks for getting back to me. Sorry about the delay in responding. This
issue was resolved by reimaging the machine. We didn't have time to
troubleshoot any longer. If this issue happens again I'll repost.

Did you have this issue before? Or did it start lately?

I don't recommend of just reinstalling Windows Explorer (or the explorer.exe
process and its dll), but if you want, do a complete reinstallation of
WIndows and reapply all updates. It will take some time though.

Also how much RAM do you have? What about virtual memory? And can you try a
defragmentation too?

Start with sfc /scannow first and a new profile, and let the reinstall be
the last resort.

Hi Jabez,

OS - Windows 2000 SP4

Having this issue with any files. It is an issue with using Windows
Explorer in general. For example, when using MS Word, if I go to File -
Open, the application hangs, then the status of Word becomes Not
Responding,
and I need to end task. I get this same result when using the left pane
in
Windows Explorer.

I have not tried sfc/scannow, and I have not tried creating a new profile,
however I have booted into safe mode and logged in as the local admin, and
get the same result.

I'm thinking it's an issue with Windows Explorer, so if there is a way to
reinstall that built in application, that would be a first place to start.
What do you think?

Hi Joe,

May I know what OS are you using?

Are you having this issue only with divx videos? What about .AVI or
.MPG?

I would suggest that you try:

sfc /scannow

Do the above in Command prompt.

Also, please try recreating a new user account/profile and try
recreating
this problem.

Report back you findings! :)

Having same problem as original poster. The file-open dialogue hangs
when
viewing files/folders from all applications. However, when opening
folders
from My Computer for example, that process works. So listing folders
hangs,
and browsing through icons seems to be okay.

I think it has to do with Windows Explorer in general. Same issue
occurs
after reboots and safe mode.

any help would be appreciated.

Joe

Hello and thanks for the reply!

When I double click on a WMV file in Windows Explorer, it launches
Windows
Media Player and plays the file without any problem. When I open the
same
file from within Media Player through File\Open, the app hangs.

I have already tried removing and reinstalling the DivX codec, to no
avail.
In task manager, when I open a video file from Windows Explorer it
takes
up
around 15% of CPU capacity. However, when I open the file from Media
Player,
it spikes up to 50% (and hangs).

Would really appreciate your input. Thanks!

launch?

I would suggest that you reinstall DivX codec and see if that
solves
the
problem. Also bring up task manager and see which application is
taking
the
most memory when you try to open the DivX file.

Hi. I've been working with some Divx encoders lately and I
noticed
suddenly
that I can no longer open video files in any media player (WMP,
Winamp,
Real...) or any video app (Dr. Divx) via the File\Open dialog.
Once
I
select
a file and click on Open, the app hangs. Strangely though, this
problem
does
not occur when I double click on the file from Windows Explorer.
Does
anyone
have a clue on this? Thanks!
