The hard disk is OK. It is divided up into partitions C:, D:, E: and F:. D
througy F are Win 2000 bootable and are working perfectly.
The Win 2000 partion, C:, now bluescreens after all the unsuccessful
repairs. I used the repair procedures on the installation CD.
The backup file resides on a separate disk drive, one which I access through
a USB interface.
I know I can use ntbackup.exe to restore to a designated location. What I
do not know is if it will restore the system configuration to the target disk
or to the disk partition, say D:, that I am running ntbackup.exe from.
If I knew for certain that the system state would restore to C: instead of
overwriting the good one in the D: partition, I would restore to C: in a
heartbeat since it is toast already. And yes, I have many applications on C:
otherwise I would have burned it to the ground a week ago.

I have a windows 2000 pro ntfs disk with several partitions. One of thesepartitions.
went bad to the extent that my only recourse is to reinstall windows if I
cannot find a way to restore the disk.
I have a complete backup including system state. I ask if I can restore
this backup file and system state from one of the adjoining disk
location,
I started to do this using the restore to original locations thingie but I
am uncertain that the system state will be restored to the original
C: instead of the partition, D:, which I am using.
All backups were made with ntbackup.exe.
It is unclear from your post if your physical partition went
bad (in which case you should replace the disk) or if your
Win2000 installation went bad. It is also unclear what exactly
you mean with "restore this backup file and system state from
one of the adjoining disk partitions". Is the backup file stored
on an adjacent partition? Is there a Win2000 installation on
an adjacent partition? Does your Win2000 installation on
drive C: still work?
There are two general rules here that are frequently overlooked:
- If Windows was installed on drive C: then it must always
run on drive C:.
- If you have an installation of Windows that is difficult or
very time consuming to replace (e.g. when you have lots
of applications, or if it is a server) then it is not sufficient
to just back it up. You must also do a practice restore
run to a spare disk in order to be confident that you can
do it if and when the crunch comes. Borrow a hard disk
or buy a second-hand one - an 8 GByte disk costs next
to nothing!
