Re: Take forever to boot and display files in a folder

Ask your administrators to run the first command that a
trained administrator would run in such a case:

ipconfig /all

then to examine the value of the line starting with "DNS Servers".
It most likely points to the wrong machine.

It sounds strange that a guy has 6 Windows Servers under his desk and know
little about Windows DNS... :-)

But actually I am a developer who develop software that runs on Windows
Server. I do know something about Windows Server, but not as throughful
as
an Adminitrator does. Basically, all my 6 machines do not have DNS
installed. They are not DNS host machine.

However, I did give the trouble machine to a network administrator, and
they
could not figure out what is the problem after having the machine for a
few
days.

I would expect that you have an appreciation of TCP/IP
settings, Domain Name Servers etc. If not then I urge you
to ask your manager to send you to a few appropriate
training courses. The cost of training a system administrator
is much less than the cost of running an incorrectly
configured system.

Hi Pegasus.

Thanks for the quick reply. However, I have a total of 6 Windows 2003
server machines under my desk, and they all belong to one domain
controller,
but only one has this problem.

Is the settings that you mentioned on the DC, or is it on this
particular
machine? Where do I go to check for DNS settings?

Thanks.

David.

Hi all,

I have two problems, and I think they are related.

One of my Windows 2003 server machine, somehow taking forever to
boot.
Every time I reboot this machine, it will take about 3 - 5 hours.
There
is
one exception about this: if I physically disconnect the network
cable,
the
machine will reboot within less than a minute.

After it has completed the reboot, every things seem to work
normally
except
the Windows Explore: If I click on a folder that has only
sub-folders,
the
list of the sub-folder display almost immediately (normal).
However,
if
the
folder contains any file - Even with a folder that has only 2,3
files,
it
takes the Windows Explore forever (at least 15 seconds) to display
the
files
in the folder.

Thanks for any help in advance.

David.

Your problem is almost certainly caused by inappropriate DNS
settings.
