Usually the manufacturers will recommend that you 1st format the hard disk
using their software when you 1st bought the hard disk. If formatting fails,
contact them for support (or contact them regarding this issue too). :)

No I did not. My original set up attempt was done on two differest drives
by
two different manufacturers. If you think it will work I will give it a
try.
I have an extra drive to use as the other is running my XP in fat 32. It
works ok in fat but I miss the security I have on my ntfs pc at work,
especially with kids in the house!

Started with an unpartitioned and unformatted drive. Let XP setup
partition
and format drive. Setup would freeze and not complete. Ran fdisk and
made
a
primary dos partition. Tried set up again and when I tried to reformat
to
ntfs the install would freeze again. Only sucessfull if I installed XP
onto
the drive formatted as FAT32.

Full format or a quick one?
You might wnat to do a chkdsk c: /f to scan your hard disl/filesystem
(assuming NTFS is on C:)

Originally I attempted to put xp pro on this computer and had the
set
up
program format the hd in ntfs. The install continously failed. I
ended
up
installing it on the hd after formatting it fat32. Any ideas why a
fresh
install will not set up in ntfs and will work in fat32? Maybe a bios
problem?

I have 2 hard drives each with xp pro installed. One is fat 32other
and
the
ntfs. The fat 32 system starts and runs fine. The ntfs disk willand
not
run
freezes during start up. I was able to get to the recoveryable
consone.
I
am
to F8 and try safe mode but it only gets so far and freezes. Thewill
ntfs
disk
does run on a different pc just not this one. Any ideas why a
ntfs
disk
work on one pc and not another?
You can't just port a WinXP disk to different hardware -
you need to make Windows aware of the new
environment. And after you do, you cannot take it
back to the old hardware.
