You should be able to recover back the files by restoring/undeleting the
file system info.
Let me suggest that you try downloaidng and using the trial of R-Undelete or
Active Partition Recovery and if the program can recover back your file
system, you should be able to recover back your files.

Here's the deal:
Computer's primary hard drive (IDE channel 0) started to fail. I put in a
new hard drive on IDE channel 1 (the 2nd channel) and attempted to copy
the
partion from the failing drive to the new drive. However, due to the
amount
of errors present on the disk, this was not possible, yet I could still
see
the files were accessible when using some other tools.
I decided to re-install windows XP Home edition on the 2nd hard drive. I
put in the CD, and created my partitions for the 2nd hard drive. When I
selected the 2nd hard drive as the drive/partition I wanted to install,
windows installation ignored my selection and prompted confirmation to
install on hard drive 1 (where the data was). I quickly selected to quick
format the drive as NTFS, and then suddenly realized my error and horror
as
windows did not format the partition I had selected.
I quickly shut off the computer to avoid any more damage caused by the
format, and then tried to recover my data from the first hard drive.
Unfortunately, the files have disappeared, and I have tried to use the
recovery console's chkdsk function to perhaps rebuild the file system, but
it
never gets past 1%
First of all, I realize that the drive should have been backed up. But
that's besides the point, I want to know if there is a way to recover the
data after it's been quickformated to ntfs. The previous file system was
NTFS. Second of all, as a comment to the windows installation team, I
would
instruct them to put two hard drives in a computer, and follow the steps
required to install windows on the 2nd IDE channel. Even if you select
the
2nd hard drive, windows installation will install on the default IDE
channel.
I've done many windows installations, but never knew or noticed this quirk
before. I was going to switch the IDE channels on the drive after I had
finished my installation to the new drive.
Sincerely,
Robert E
