Windows XP Pro not logging in

I tried to login into my laptop using Windows XP Pro and it is hanging on
logon. Have tried administrator profile and own personal profile. Neither
login. Have run recovery console from installation cd and this allows me to
login with administrator account. Have tried to fix the problem using this,
but it has not worked. I can CHKDIR "C:\documents and settings\profile\my
documents\" and see that my documents are still there. But I cannot CD into
the directory. Get message saying access denied.
If anyone has any knowledge on how to fix this particular problem it would
be much appreciated. If however we cannot fix the login problem I would like
to be able to copy all my docs off laptop and then rebuild if necessary. But
how can I copy these docs to an external USB hard drive through CMD prompt if
access is being denied?
Many thanks.
Coco
