file synch

I need some help with file synch. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.
Some background:
I had a Win2K Desktop and an XP laptop. Synchronization was set up and
worked fine. The only "specialty": I had the synchronized files set up on the
laptop on the D: drive, using "cachemov", which is a MS utility, I think.
Then I upgraded my Desktop to XP (had to do a new installation), and the
synch didn't work anymore. set it up again: Deleted the synchronized folder
on the laptop, made the synchronized folder shared on the desktop, then made
the shared folder "available offline" on the laptop. The laptop took an
enormously long time (10 hours via a broadband connection) to synch.
After it was done, I noticed that most, but not all files were synched.
Also, if I do a manual synch, the laptop seems to take forever and synch each
file several times. When I shut my laptop down, the synchronization is
quicker.
I think I need to start over again. Is there an article somewhere that
describes how to do this exactly?
