autochk program not found - skipping autocheck

Hi,
I changed the file attributes of my C: drive using the properties-->security
options such that I took away access rights for 'Everyone' and added 'Me' who
happens to have administrative rights but is not administrater per se. I
have have accidentally changed the 'hidden' attributes but I'm not sure.
Problem is I can no longer boot windows XP profession. The error message is
stated below. When booting with the OS disk in safe mode the file attributes
of autochk.exe look something like:
--a----- (there is only 'a' and nothing else). Looking around on the net I
believe I may have hidden the files in this directory or even the entire
partition. Solutions are to boot using a linux boot disk and use fdisk to
'unhide' the partition. Similarly with PartitionMagic or some other 3rd party
software. After all these years I can't believe Microsoft does not have a
simple way to change file permissions in SafeMode. Seems like a pretty
simple thing to include. Hopefully I'm just missing something here and do
not have to resort to 3rd party solutions for something so simple:

BTW, "chkdsk /r" reports no errors at all and I don't believe I have
corrupted any files.
