    Dave,

Good article, but I responded to it with the following:

Clarification/caveat, lets add the case of Ie10_01 to the mix, then we have
    the following:

    In Windows XP:
       Ie4_01
       Ie4_128
       Ie5
       Ie6
       Ie10_01
       Ie401sp2
       Ie501sp2

    In Windows 2000:
       Ie10_01 (very wrong)
       Ie4_01
       Ie4_128
       Ie401sp2
       Ie5
       Ie501sp2
       Ie6

Therefore, my own personal conclusion, to properly handle the sorting of
numerical values in files in either OS:
       1. Don't rely on the OS to do your thinking for you.
       2. Instead the best method to follow is to think ahead and use padding,
and other thinking ahead methods. For instance the following are just
    wrong/troublesome:
              Ie401sp2
              Ie501sp2
Instead they should be (using the original naming conventions):
              Ie4_01_sp2
              Ie5_01_sp2

Thus, the following naming will always sort properly in either OS:
       Ie04-001

       Ie04-001-sp2
       Ie04-128
       Ie05
       Ie05-001-sp2
       Ie06
       Ie10-001

Note: I personally prefer hyphens (single keystroke) here rather than
    underscores (keystroke gymnastics).

Dates are another similar issue. I find the best naming in this case is
YYYY-MM-DD. For us Americans this may seem foreign, but it actually makes
chronological sense. Also, although 8000 years from now this system will
seem shortsighted & will fall apart, ask me if I care.

    My 2˘,

    John
