Thank you for posting!

This issue is strange. We may need some time to find the cause since it
occurs randomly. Also, I found that you mentioned KB 823230. So, I assume
that you are using Windows Server 2003.

Based on the message, I would like to clarify the following information.

1. There is only one DFS root and the three servers are configured as
replication clients, right? If not, please let me know the configuration in
detail.

2. Do you remember the names of the missing files? I need to know the name
so that it's easy to find them in log files.

3. Since the replication process will not delete files, I suggest you
enable auditing on the DFS files. If the issue occurs in the future, we may
need if some user or process delete them.

4. Does the files missing on one server or all of the three servers?

5. Are the DFS files changed frequently?

6. Will changing the NTFS security of other files cause replication?

7. Based on the report of Ultrasound, you may install the 823230 fix. To
get it, you may call the local PSS.

8. Send the Event Viewer logs of the problem servers to me
so that I could find more information about the error.

Step 1: Click Start, click Run, and then type "eventvwr" (without the
quotation
marks), click OK.

Step 2: Right-click Application and select Save Log File As.

Step 3: Save it Application.evt.

Step 4: Repeat step 1 to 3 to save the Security and System event to
Security.evt
and System.evt.

Step 5: Send them to me (jackwa@microsoft.com).

9. Use the health_chk tool below. On each server run the following command
and send the log file to me.

health_chk C:\FRSInfo

10. Use Windows Explorer to examine the log files that are created for FRS
and send them to me. The log files are located in the %Systemroot%\Debug
folder. The file names are listed from NtFrs_001.log to NtFrs_005.log.

To get the missing files back, you may need to copy the files from backup
to the DFS root. Then, it will be repliacated to other servers. If the file
still exists on one or two servers, you may copy them to solve the issue.
To prevent this issue in the future, please periodic backup the files and
check the logs to keep the FRS in a health status.

| DFS with replication configured between three servers
| configured as Hub and Spoke.
|
| A server in London set as the hub and the source of data
| for the initial replication.
|
| Problem -------
| Initially replication would appear to have been
| successful but on further investigation some files where
| found to be missing.
|
| New files created are replicated susses fully.
|
| Changing the NTFS security on the files does not appear
| to get the missing files to replicate but deleting a file
| and copying back does cause replication.
|
| Analysis -------
| Installed the Ultrasound tool which highlighted the
| following warnings (no errors)
| 1. 823230 Hotfix recommended
| 2. Excessive replication (on the London server)
| 3. Morphed Change order created.
|
| Looking in details, files.
| All the files would appear to be listed except for the
| missing files on the remote server.
|
| Question -------
| What is the best method to get the missing files to
| replicate correctly?
| Any other suggestions for preventing further problems.
