Active Directory/Mobile User

I have a network which includes laptops that connect back to the domain via
an application called NetMotion. This software allows the laptops to go
between WiFi and Cell mobile networks while maintaining a persistent
connection back to my network.
The problem I'm running into invlolves what I believe to be behaviors with
Home Drives/directories. When I have a user logon which has a home directory
set in AD, the computer acts sluggish (when on the slower link connection)
when perforing NON-network tasks such as clicking the start menu. I know
that a lot of SMB packets are being transmitted back to my DCs from looking
at packet traces. These packets are all looking to the home directory
located on a file server. When I logon with a user account that DOES NOT
have a home directory configured, these problems go away (along with the
constant SMB traffic).
Removing the home directory for all users isn't a viable option as when on
the LAN they are necessary. I'm just wondering if there is a way to make the
remote XP pro domain clients (laptops) ignore the homedir information when
the users logon. Thanks!
