Thanks Bob,

I finally found the problem. The new HP laptops in the bios have a LAN/WLAN
switiching facility. Disabling this seems to have done the trick. When
enabled it appears to poll or something similar between LAN/WLAN there is
very short time gap between them and that is when the connection is lost.

Disable = Allows both LAN and WLAN to be active at the same time.
Enable = Allows only one of the features to be active at the same time.
Allows WLAN only when no LAN link is available (no cable).
