i don't get an initial connection to be able to put in the private address. i
get the public address through 'myipaddress', is this the correct one?
firewall is configured to allow remote desktop which allows port 3389 to pass
through. port forwarding in the router is setup to point to one of the
internal pc address eg. 168.192.0.0

can't login intially to get to be able to enter the private ip of the router.
i have port forwarding on my router pointing to my internal address eg.
192.162.0.0. and i have remote desktop allowed in firewall which allows port
3389 to pass through. i have seen on posts addresses entered in the initial
connection something like this.. 164.85.87.26:8080. with ports assigned to
the address, does this have anything to do with it?

Hi, i am having major drama setting up remote desktop connection
via a router using Windows XP Pro. i have set up port forwarding
on 3389 to point the home pc within my home network. i don't know
if i have to allow or give permissions to the remote pc, if so i
don't know how to do this. I must be missing something. I have
read about 3 articles but not success. im basically looking for
the best way to connect to my computer from an outside pc using
xp via a netgear router so i can download my files to the remote
pc or read information on my pc at home. i am trying to do this
with out client software loaded onto remote pc's. can someone
please point me in the right direction.
Technically - here is what *you* would need...
1) Setup port forwarding on the router so that requests to 3389 on
the public IP address of your router forward to the internal IP
address of the machine in question.
2) Remote desktop enabled on the machine in question.
3) A user that is in the administrators group *or* in the remote
desktop users group that *has* a password assigned to them for
logon. 4) Port 3389 allowed through the software firewall,
5) In order for it to work external to your router - you must know
the external IP address of your router and/or set it up with a
Dynamic DNS service (like dyndns.org) so you only have to remember
the name (like joeblack.dyndns.org) and enter that into the
external machines's remote desktop client.
Essentially - that is it.
Which part is stopping you? What error messages are you seeing?
etc.

when i try to do a remote connect from the remote pc, it won't find
the host desktop ip address. do i have to allow a remote users
group? did i read that properly, if so how do i do this. i didn't
see that group available.
First - in order to get the initial connection - no - you do not need a user
in the Remote Desktop Users group/Administrators group.
Are you entering the public IP of your router when trying to connect from
outside your network?
Are you entering the private IP of your machine when trying to connect
within your network?
Do you have Port 3389 allowed through your software firewall?
