No, its best to use a static IP address if you use port forwarding.

Can you connect to the laptop using RDP from another PC on the same LAN? See
my RDP troubleshooting page for help with that...

I have the Dlink router DHCP server disabled and am using the SMC as the
DHCP

laptop takes it's IP address from the SMC it is going to be in the range

dynamic IP addresses from the SMC. When I want to get into the laptop
remotely to run the camera, I use the dynamic IP from the laptop. I see
when
you try to port frwrd in the SMC that it only gives you a range within
it's
assigned address range. xx.xx.xx.10-255. I will let you know how it works!

Given that you need to forward/open TCP Port 3389 on the SMC modem/router
to
the private LAN IP of the PC your trying to connect to. The D-Link should
act like a switch/bridge and no port forwarding is needed on that device.
The PC you want to connect to should be using a static IP address...

I do something similar on my current LAN. In my case I have an old NR041
4-Port Router as the front end to my cable ISP. I also have a Buffalo
WBR-G54 4-Port Router/Wireless Access Point connected to the NR041. Now
in
my case I only use the WBR-G54 as a wireless access point meaning that I
turn off its DHCP server, assign its wired LAN interface a static IP in
the
range of the NR041 and don't use the WAN port on the WBR-G54. Here is my

Can you access the PC using RDP over the private LAN? If you can't do
that
then you won't be able to do it over the public internet from a remote
site.

ok, let me tell you more detail about the problem. I have an SMC
Modem/Router
from the ISP. (Comcast) I have the D-link wireless router connected
through a
lan port on the SMC. Since there is no WAN port. I have gone in and

forwarded the public IP address into the SMC and I can now ping the
wireless
laptop but I still cannot get into it remotely. I have spoke with Dlink

Comcast and Dlink says there is nothing they can do. Comcast says that
with a
public IP address I do not need to port frwrd. They say it is a
microsoft
problem. Without the port frwrd I could not ping the laptop. I have the
port
frwrd in the SMC and not in the Dlink router. I have 3 computers
connected
to
the Dlink and the server is one of them. I can remote access the server
but
not the laptop over the wireless connection. Please help before I loose
a
customer. Thanks
