If the home PC is running XP Pro then you can use Remote Desktop...

If the home PC is running XP Home then look at using UltraVNC with its
encryption plug-in...

In both cases you can also run Remote Desktop or UltraVNC through a VPN or
Secure Shell (SSH) tunnel for added security.
