Hi all. For about 4 months we have been trying to get Remote Assistance to
work on our internal network. The stats:
We currently have an NT 4.0 domain with all XP clients. We have been trying
to get Remote Assistance to function correctly but have the following problem:
The user requesting assistance places the request either via email or file.
The admin can open the file and connect to the users computer. But instead
of being able to take control of the users desktop, it acts like Remote
Desktop and logs the user off.
All XP machines are behind a firewall and port 3389 is open internally. All
XP machines have had no SP, SP1, and SP2.
If we take the same 2 machines off our network and put them in a 2000\2003
test network, Remote Assistance works perfectly!
We finally dropped the dime(245.00) to Microsoft and the solution provided is:
1. Upgrade your network to 2003. NT 4.0 does not handle domains in the
same manner that 2000\2003 does, thus the problem using RA.
2. Utilize a 3rd party solution such as GotoMyPC, PCanywhere, etc.
Just posting this in case someone else has any ideas or is in a similar
boat. And someday, we hope soon, we will be upgrading our 100,000+ pc's and
950 servers to 2003. But cost is an issue here I assume.
thanks,
Dale
