I think you mean VPN *from* your laptop to your home network, right?

VPN can be fine, but if you're trying to access "huge files" it likely won't
be what you want if you just try to access the files through Explorer, a
command line, whatnot. If you run XP Pro on the "server" desktop PC you
have, you can enable Remote Desktop access to it...will be a lot more
efficient. You can use VPN to access Remote Desktop if you want increased
security, or you can just forward port 3389 to your computer's LAN IP in
your router and use the remote desktop client on your laptop to connect. If
you have a dynamic IP from your ISP, see www.dyndns.org for one option....
