Thanks for the help, MSHOME was the domain I left my network with when a
friend popped around with his machine temporarily, other than that my
'network' consists of my PC, and a router/ADSL modem/firewall. unplugging
this while trying to dial in made no difference, the domain simply seemed a
logical one to try

If I don't specify a domain, the connection bangs out showing "the answering
modem has disconnected" on the PDA, and "no network protocol could be
established" in the event log. this seems strange to me.

however, trying PCname\username, (without specifying a domain) works,
insofar as now I get the error:

The user KATHRYN\erica failed an authentication attempt due to the following
reason: There was an authentication failure because of an unknown user name
or a bad password.

Despite appearances to the contrary, I'm not that dumb. going through all
these attempts I've retyped it that many times, this can't be a simple typo.

The User was created using the control panel users pane, selected in the
'incomming connections' properties.

I also tried adding the user to several groups using the 'manage' option in
my computer, including remote desktop etc (it is an admin user)

I've tried deleting and recreating the user, but still the same.

any other ideas? other than the standard 'check details and try again' MS
seems to love so much.
